Hoy hago una cover a la batería de la canción "WALKING BY MYSELF" versioneada por GARY MOORE, ya que el tema original fue compuesto por James A. Lane, músico estadounidense conocido artísticamente como JIMMY ROGERS (1924 Ruleville. Misisipi - 1997 Chicago). JIMMY ROGERS fue cantante y guitarrista y está considerado como uno de los músicos precursores del blues de Chicago sobre todo entre las décadas de 1950 y 1960.

Robert William GARY MOORE nació en la ciudad de Belfast (Irlanda del Norte)  el 4/4/1952 y falleció el 6/2/2011. Fue un guitarrista extraordinario además de vocalista, compositor y productor. Comenzó su carrera musical en 1968 con la banda "SKID ROW" donde coincidió con "PHIL LYNOTT" (Líder de "THIN LIZZY"). A finales de la década de los años 70 publicó varios discos como solista con influencias de sonidos como el blues, rock, blues rock y el hard rock. En los años 90 se centró en un sonido mas blues rock recibiendo influencias de otros sonidos mas rockeros, de heavy metal e incluso de la música celta. Como guitarrista, algunas de sus principales influencias provienen de músicos como Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green, B.B. King, Eric Clapton o Jimmy Page, entre otros. GARY MOORE ha publicado a lo largo de su carrera de mas de 40 años 18 discos de estudio y además ha trabajado también la grabación de guitarras para otros músicos como John Mayall, Mick Jagger, Cozy Powell, entre otros.

En cuanto a la canción elegida para hoy "WALKING BY MYSELF" fue incluida en el noveno álbum de estudio de GARY MOORE, "STILL GOT THE BLUES" publicado en 1990. Dicho álbum incluye temas como  "STILL GOT THE BLUES (FOR YOU)", "TOO TIRED" o "TEXAS STRUT" y tuvo un gran éxito de ventas, alcanzando el puesto 83 en los Billboard 200 en EEUU, vendiendo allí mas de medio millón de copias y más de 300.000 copias en el Reino Unido. En concreto la canción WALKING BY MYSELF y TOO TIRED entraron en el "Top 100" de la lista "Singles Chart" del Reino Unido.

 En esta ocasión vamos más que con una canción podríamos decir que se trata de un "himno" dentro del Blues, "SWEET HOME CHICAGO", canción que fue escrita y grabada en el año 1936 por ROBERT JOHNSON (1911-1938; conocido como el "Rey del Blues del Delta" del Missisipi y considerado por muchos como el "Abuelo del Rock And Roll"). Éste músico influyó notablemente en el sonido del Blues, del Rhythm and Blues y en lo que posteriormente fue el inicio del Rock & Roll y su posterior desarrollo en músicos como Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, John Fogerty, The Allman Brothers, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc., por ejemplo el propio Eric Clapton dijo de él que es "el músico más importante de blues que haya vivido" y eso que solo vivió 27 años y escribió tan solo 29 canciones. Se le considera a ROBERT JOHNSON junto a BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON, como el gran maestro de la "guitarra slide" (Técnica que consiste en deslizar sobre la cuerdas de la guitarra un tubo metálico, aunque en sus inicios utilizaban por ejemplo un cuello de botella "bottleneck", consiguiendo con esta técnica un sonido punzante y sinuoso típico de la música afroamericana primitiva). En la revista Rolling Stone ROBERT JOHNSON ocupó el lugar 71 de la lista de los 100 mas grandes guitarristas de todos los tiempos y fue incluido en el Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll en 1986 en la categoría de "Early Influence" (Influencias tempranas).

Pero volvamos a la canción SWEET HOME CHICAGO porque además de los muchos años que tiene arrastra mucha historia detrás, de hecho dicha canción en realidad es una variación de la canción "KOKOMO BLUES" popularizada por SCRAPPER BLACKWELL, DAVIS MADLYN y JAMES ARNOLD. La primera versión fue grabada en el año 1928 por Scrapper Blackwell y se refiere a la ciudad de Kokomo (Indiana). James Arnold grabó su versión en 1934 y la rebautizó como "OLD ORIGINAL BLUES KOKOMO". La canción desde hace muchos años se convirtió en un homenaje a la ciudad de Chicago, aunque la letra original se refiere a California y fue alterada en la mayoría de versiones. La canción ha sido versioneada muchísimas veces por bandas como THE BLUES BROTHERS (que es la versión que he cogido para hacer el ensayo de hoy, The Blues Brothers fue un número cómico creado por JOHN BELUSHI y DAN AYKROYD para el programa televisivo "Saturday Night Live" entre los años 1975-79 y donde formaron una banda de Rythm & Blues con la que publicaron varios discos). Otros músicos que han versioneado la canción son Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Magic Sam, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Status Quo, entre otros muchos.

"THE THRILL IS GONE" 

2.- Bueno, me he animado con mi segunda entrada en el blog, va un ensayo con la batería (drum cover) del tema "THE THRILL IS GONE". Se trata de un blues que fue escrito por Rick Darnell y Roy Hawkins en el año 1951 aunque el tema se hizo popular de la mano de la voz y guitarra de B.B. KING quien grabó su versión en el año 1969 para su álbum "Completeley Well". 

Esta canción fue el principal éxito en su carrera musical y con la que consiguió un Grammy por la mejor interpretación de R&B vocal masculina y un premio Grammy Salón de la Fama en el año 1998. También consiguió el puesto 183 en la lista de las 500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos en la revista Rolling Stone.
Ha sido un tema muy versioneado en la historia por muchos grupos y músicos desde los años 70 hasta nuestros días y es que lo bueno nunca pasa de moda.
